Launched in May 2022 with a fleet of eight TXAI self-driving vehicles and four mini Robobuses released in June, the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), of the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has reported the commencement of phase two of the Smart Mobility Project on Yas and Saadiyat Islands.
15 new charging stations were added in October across Yas and Saadiyat Islands and the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) has begun operation in November, prior to the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit in November.
ITC also reiterated that the project was a unique experience for the visitors who travelled to and from the race venue and how its new routes have and continue to alleviate traffic congestion by using the smart buses and taxis. It is aimed at reinforcing the operational capabilities of Abu Dhabi’s “Digital Twin” system, which comprises of building an integrated system as a basis for advanced digital simulations and providing support and technical infrastructure services supplied by the cloud computing system T100 which facilitates the storage and processing of data through integrated operating systems.
The project is in collaboration between ITC and Bayanat, a G42 company that specialises in AI-powered geospatial intelligence as part of Abu Dhabi’s smart transport strategy to adopt smart and sustainable transport solutions.
While the first phase had resounding success, Eng. Hasan Al Hosani, CEO of Bayanat had stated that the second phase represents a milestone in the digital transformation of the transport system in Abu Dhabi. “We have increased the size of the fleet and implemented the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system, in addition to geographical expansion of operational areas. We are also excited to begin the second phase in cooperation with the Integrated Transport Centre, thereby contributing to the development of smart and sustainable cities, that are in line with the aspirations of the UAE’s wise leadership.” He added.
Abu Dhabi’s smart digitalisation strategy aims to utilize modern technology to provide sustainable transportation with the use of the eco-friendly and smart autonomous vehicles. The project is also aimed at contributing its achievements to the UAE’s Sustainable Development Goals by reducing carbon emissions in line with the Paris Agreement of Cop 21 and the UAE Net Zero 2050 vision.
