The American Community School recently welcomed 1,200 students to its new home on Saadiyat Island, marking a significant milestone after more than 50 years at its previous location in Al Bateen

Abu Dhabi’s one of the oldest school has relocated to a state-of-the-art campus, ready to inspire and educate future generations. The American Community School recently welcomed 1,200 students to its new home on Saadiyat Island, marking a significant milestone after more than 50 years at its previous location in Al Bateen. With a strong focus on technology, sustainability, and the promotion of the Arabic language, the school is determined to empower its teachers and unlock the potential of every student. The superintendent, Monique Flickinger, expressed her enthusiasm for this new chapter, emphasizing the school’s commitment to providing an exceptional educational experience. The community open day event held on Sunday was a testament to the school’s popularity, with over 1,500 attendees. Previously situated in Khalidiya since 1972, the school was established on land donated by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE’s Founding Father. Starting with just eight classrooms and a capacity for 200 students, the new campus boasts impressive facilities, including a science wing, a theater, an art gallery, swimming pools, basketball courts, a football pitch, and a wellness center. The school’s objective is to cultivate students’ understanding of advanced technology, with a particular focus on robotics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and virtual reality. Jelica Martin, the president of the parent-teacher association, expressed her excitement for the move to the new campus.

Her 16-year-old daughter has been a student at the school for nearly 13 years, starting in kindergarten. Ms. Martin expressed her love for the school, stating, “This campus is the only one we have known throughout her entire school life. We have a deep affection for this school.” Entering ACS, one can immediately sense the passion and drive that resonates within our community. This vibrant energy extends beyond the classrooms and hallways. Finally, we have a campus that truly embodies and reflects the spirit of ACS. The new campus not only boasts impressive buildings that look better, but it also offers more opportunities for our children. For instance, my child is part of the track and field team, and now they have their own track to practice on, instead of having to travel to different locations across the city. The high school’s science labs provide an entirely different level of space and resources. I believe that this will open up more opportunities for our kids to explore various fields of study. Furthermore, the proximity of the campus to NYUAD is exciting for us. We anticipate collaboration between the two institutions, allowing our children to benefit from being near the university. The exchange of knowledge and the opportunity to visit the campus will be invaluable. The campus itself integrates technology and sustainability, providing students with hands-on experiences. They can delve deeper into subjects through projects like the three-story teaching greenhouse and learning about sustainable energy through the school’s solar panels, which generate 35% of its annual energy. Additionally, the campus houses an Arabic Institute of Excellence, which pioneers new approaches to teaching Arabic and offers training to teachers worldwide. Matt Ayoub, the chairman of the ACS Board of Trustees, expressed his gratitude and joy in witnessing students discover their new learning spaces. He believes that this marks a transformative step forward in the school’s pursuit of excellence.
